Next two photos and comments are copyright and used with permission of Peter Flahavin, Melbourne, Australia. "This Wildcat is situated at Vilu War museum on Guadalcanal , about a 25 minute drive west of Honiara . It is part of a relic collection gathered by Islander Fred Kona in the late 60's - early 70's . I was told it was pulled out of the jungle near Tasimboko in 1972 and originally the wings still folded . It has sat there since and they had at least 3 offers to buy it over the years from US plane enthusiasts . From the state of the plane I would say the pilot probably did survive - looks like it crash landed pretty intact . Fred Kona died in 1985 and his wife took over the collection . Since June 99 the ethnic violence on Guadalcanal has forced her and her family to flee back to the island of Malaita . Currently this and the rest of the collection is lying abandoned in "no go" militant controlled country" |
