Good start on the web page, when will the F14 arrive at Calverton site? What is the current planned date for the mounting of the Tomcat on the "stick"? What are the obstacles to this project? Has the exact location of the aircraft been determined yet, within the Calverton complex? Is the paint job on the aircraft going to be changed from "fleet drab" color? How close to Route 25 will the Tomcat be located in feet? Tell me more, please. Jim Roth

Great Idea. Can wait to see it when it is complete. I enjoyed working in Calverton for 13 years; it was the best site to work for. I've worked on many of the aircraft that when through that site but by far the F-14D was my favorite. Keep the site going.....Maybe their is an A-6F still around that can be erected at the park also.

I stumbled upon your website. It is wonderful. I worked at Grumman in Analog-Digital in the early sixties when Alan Shepard. Gus Grissum, Wally Shirra and John Glenn used their simulator. The Memorial Park will be a super way to keep Grumman's contribution to Space and Aviation a living reminder for all to see. Good luck and hello to all my former co-workers if you are out there!

Very nice web site, I look forward to it growing!

My dad worked at Long Island, we moved to Houston in '66 with the LEM and have been in Texas every since! My brother, dad and I all spent some time building pieces of the Tomcat's in Houston.

Grumman, the Lunar Module and Tomcats have always had a special place in our family. My kids love telling their friends that their grandpa used to build "spaceships"!!

My first job out of High School was at Grumman Houston Corp, building F-14 Nose Wheel Doors. My Favorite memory is of Mr. John Linder, who came to Houstom from Long Island with the LEM. He began his life at Grumman when he was just a lad, and was ancient when I knew him....never missed a day at work...NOT ONE....smartest man, and machinist I ever had the pleasure to know.

Dear Bob,

You didn't leave your e-mail address so I will try to respond to you via the comments section of our web site for all to see also. Grumman memorial park is a memorial and future museum paying tribute to the people that made the company, that includes you Bob and all the others who helped make the company called Grumman tick. If all of us don't get together to do something there wont be anything left for future generations to show what you and many other key devoted employees did for this country and the world. So rather than be despondent, try to proud that a group of concerned Grummanites are trying to do the right thing. It's not for the golden parachutes Bob, it's for you.

Thanks, Steve K Chair East End Aircraft

I have been an enthusiast of the F-14 ever since my younger brother (aka "Tomcat") fell in love with the craft. Through collecting and studying with him, I developed a strong respect for plane and the people who built them. This respect deepened, though, when I actually spoke with some of the people involved in the F-14 project. They graciously sent F-14 merchandise that my brother and I treasured. They were again more than gracious in helping provide images of the F-14 which I requested for the unfortunate task of creating the memorial for my brother's grave. He was killed in an automobile accident just a few days before starting ground school. He was 17. Needless to say, you have my best wishes and support for this fine project. I will suggest using a service such as ListBot (listbot.com) to create a mailing list so that we might know when the park is open. I will continue to visit the site and plan on visiting as soon as possible. On behalf of my "Tomcat", and in light of the many hours we shared together admiring the F-14, thank you! You have a great deal to be proud of in your product and your people. Sincerely, DMScott

Congratulations to all of those people who have contributed their time and effort to returning a Tomcat to Calverton (the hardway, I might add, by tow tractor down the public road system). It was a very touching and memorable scene at the end of the Calverton runway, watching a Tomcat return in silence, rather than to the sounds of its roaring engines and afterburners . . the way it left so many years ago. When Tomcat climbs upon its mount, with the help of many volunteers, it will become an attraction that will be viewed by millions of people over the years to come. The only sounds to be heard will be "oohs and aahs" plus the clicking of cameras. The control stick, and rudders pedals with "Grumman" in raised letters, will never move again! Sort of a sad thought for such a great warrior. Hopefully, someone will ensure that Tomcat is well-lighted at night and kept clean and shiny throughout its tour as a memorial object. What an honor that every one of the over 700 Tomcats produced in the world have a tag which reads, "Made in Riverhead". <CDR Jim Roth, Tomcat Pilot sends>

I'm glad to see something being done to imortalize a company and it's employees. The F14 aircraft site is a great idea. Think about this, the A6 aircraft really put the Grumman Corp on the map, so consider placing a A6 aircraft at the site, it would make the park complete.. I would be interested in purchasing a brick in the walk ..I'm proud to have worked at Calverton for 20 years. And having worked on the A6 & F14 & EA6B & F111. Please contact me at St Augustine Ill be happy to support this project.

It’s great to see there will be a place of honor for a corporation that has done so much for the Nation and the people of Long Island.

My father, my brother and I all had the privilege of working for Grumman. My father worked on the flight line for as long as I can remember, my brother worked as an inspector and I worked with computers. Many times my job would take me to Calverton and each time I went, it was a thrill to see an A6 or F14 taking off or landing. It was great to think that I worked for a company who not only made the best airplanes in the world but did so much for the defense of our Nation!

I remember as a kid when Apollo 11 landed on the moon and being so proud of Dad for building the LEM. At the time I thought Dad built the LEM all by himself, little did I know 20,000+ other employees helped as well. I was proud of him then and still proud of him today and feel very lucky to have a father like him.

Growing up (and still living)on the Island, Grumman was not only a great place to work but an extended family as well. Grumman gave us a roof over our heads, a place to learn and grow, food on the table, health benefits, life long friends, tuition reimbursement, an investment plan, a pension plan and a place most employees are proud to say they worked! Things most of us can't claim working for other corporations today.

I received the letter from the BFCU and had an idea for collecting funds for the Grumman Memorial Park. Last year I contributed $100 to the Ellis Island fund to add my father's name to the wall. I thought that if you had a similar wall; with Grumman employees names, and collected $100 per name, you would probably collect alot of money! I would be more incline to contribute if I too (like BFCU) was being recognized on a monument. What do you think??????

The only commentI could have, is more a question. This being, Why is this memorial to Grumman Aerospace Corp. and it's employees being constructed in Calverton rather than in Bethpage? Bethpage is far more the home of GAC than the former Navy property in Calverton. The Real Estate in Bethpage is certanly clear for new construction, and it seems that Northrop Grumman is looking for New Buyers for the property. At the Very least, I say thank you for your efforts to keep the Proud tradition of GAC and it's employees visible for all to see.

Dear Jerry,

The property in Bethpage is far more valuable than the property in Calverton and the airstrip in Bethpage has been closed while Calverton will remain open for future aircraft deliveries. There will be no cost for the Calverton property it will be a town monument site.

Thanks, Steve

Fantastic!! All of you folks are doing a great job. I have very strong feelings about the "old" Grumman and the people that made it a great place to work. So many friends, so many memories, mostly good some bad, during my 39 years at Grumman. I was very depressed and upset when this great company was destroyed. My main concern was the fate of all of my co-workers who were still actively employed. I would not be sitting here enjoying retirement in sunny Florida if it weren't for Grumman. The company should never be forgotten for all of it's contributions to Long Island's economy, the nations defense and for giving opportunity to all of us who worked there. The memorial and this website are great ideas. My congratulations go those at ground zero who are making it work. I usually make a trip to NY in the spring. The next one will include a trip to Calverton. I hope to have an inscribed brick and support this effort. Regards and good health to all of my fellow Grummanites. If any of you recognize my name, it would be nice to hear from you.

I learned of the Grumman Memorial Park effort through a solicitation from BFCU that I received in mail today here in Atlanta. It definitely sent a tingle up my back. Was glad to see that such a park and museum was being created. I hope that other aircraft could be added in future. My father in law who still lives on LI sent an article indicating that operational aircraft might be part of museum eventually. I did miss the sounds of aircraft operating nearby, but now get to hear and see an occasional E2C and F14 flying around Dobbins. I still have fond memories and special place for EA6B Prowler, the only program I worked on for 11.5 years while at Grumman. I will be sure to visit this web site for updates.

I was a Grumman "Brat." Fred Hall (Bethpage/Calverton) is my Dad, a 43 year employee! I don't have him set up on the Internet yet, but soon he will be able to log on himself. I can't wait for him to see this. He has become quite the computer whiz since he has retired. Thanks for the memories!

This is such a wonderful idea! I received the information in my BFCU newsletter. My father has worked for Grumman, Northrop Grumman and now what might be Lockhead Martin Northrop Grumman for over 30 years. He is getting ready to retire and I can't think of a better way for my family to honor his work at Grumman and dedication to the aerospace field than by having him registered on the Walk of Fame. Thank you for making this opportunity for the thousands of family members who had parents, brothers, and sisters work at Grumman and for making a permanent memorial on Long Island.

As a mere 1 year employee of Grumman Data Systems, I was appalled to hear a few years ago when my father, James Suchocki, retired just a few months short of 25 years was not given his Grumman watch that he so wanted to receive and display to all his friends and family. He talked of nothing else for the last year of employment but getting the watch and receiving a nice dinner from his employer saying "thanks Jim, for all your hard work over the years". That's all he wanted to hear. What he actually received instead of the watch and dinner, was a kick in the butt out the door, and was told to have a nice life! I think that sucks, and I also think that whoever is left in the Grumman hierarchy needs to re-evaluate that decision and dig down deep and cough up a nice watch piece for my dad and for all the other hard working employees of the original Grumman people, who, as well as my dad, deserve that momentum of posterity!!

It is a great thing that the employees of the Grumman Corporation be paid tribute to the effort and impact that they made to the Aerospace industry as well as the economy of Long Island. My husband Lawrence B. Brown Sr. worked for Grumman for almost 39 years as did is father before him and both of his sons. It means a great deal to them that the Grumman name does not die, that it will be forever memorialized for their part in history. I am sorry that we cannot afford to donate more than we have through the BFCU. Thank you for creating this memorial. Karen Brown

GRUMMAN WILL ALWAYS BE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT THING IN MY LIFE. ALL OF MY FAMILY WORKED THERE AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER. IT WAS MY FIRST JOB OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL AND PROVIDED ME WITH OPPORTUNITY TO ADVANCE TO THE POINT OF BEING WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY AND TODAY WITH THE DEFENSE CONTRACT MANAGEMENT COMMAND. I FEEL ENORMOUSLY HONORED TO HAVE BEEN A "GRUMMANITE" AND ASSOCIATED WITH SUCH A TALENTED FAMILY. THE GRUMMAN MEMORIAL PARK IS AN OUTSTANDING IDEA TO REMIND ALL OF WHAT WE LONG ISLANDERS WERE, ARE, AND WILL BE. I MISS THE "DAYS" . . . .

As a former Assistant Historian for Grumman (1984-1988), I am very enthusiastic about this undertaking. I only just learned of this project today, quite by accident while searching the web for completely unrelated material. I landed on this fabulous site. I am willing to help in any way that I can. I am an accomplished modeler, having many of my exhibits on display at the old Grumman History Center in Plant 35, the old GHQ and several US Navy installations as well. My last job function at Grumman was coordinating trade shows and exhibits. I would be very happy to contribute my skills in this area to the Park. Keep up the the good work!

Great work!

What you are doing is wonderful. It will always require a lot of hard work, will always have too little budget; and of course, there will never be enough time to do everything you want to do.

But after all that, you will glow with the satisfaction that comes when you have preserved something worthwhile, for those who care.

Dick, The biographies in the history section are reprinted with permission from Newsday. I'm glad you enjoyed them. The history section will eventually have photos and info on everything made by Grumman.
