I was an Aviation Machinist's Mate (Jet) with Attack Squadron 65 (VA-65) from January, 1972 to December, 1974. After completing the '71-'72 Med cruise aboard USS Independence (CVA-62) our squadron returned to NAS Oceana with our A-6As and KA-6Ds and proceeded to transfer the A-6As to other squadrons in preparation for the transition to new A-6Es. We received them from the Bethpage facility in consecutive BuNos starting with 158531 (Modex 500) thru 158539 (Modex 510) with Modex 509 not being used. We applied the often photographed stylized "AG" CVW-7 tailcode and the "Tiger" stripes to the aircraft. I have mostly fond memories of working on the Intruder and am sad that the Navy has chosen to retire the venerable workhorse of attack aviation.

This is a fabulous idea and I will do all I can to support it. I worked at Calverton for 25 years before moving to Melbourne on the Join Stars program. Have you moved the F-14 yet? If you have not count me in if there is anything I can do to help in any area please let me know.

Now, instead of looking through the fence with tears in eyes, you have given me the opportunity to once again, be a part of something that I loved; the Grumman family. Thanks, Al Russo 065531

I think what is taking place is great and long over due. Its hard to express how I feel about Grumman as far as I am concerned there will never be an other company like it. There was nothing that the Grumman people could not accomplish with their can do attitude. I don't think the NAVY will ever see an aircraft produced again the way Grumman did. Thanks

Our mail is delivered by a Grumman mail truck. I see at least one Grumman bus every day. My sons fire truck tape features a Grummand fire truck. Tonight, two EA-6B's will jam the AEGIS radar site here in Moorsetown, NJ. I quietly cheer for the jammers I worked on for 11 years. Thumbs up for the Website!

Hi. I was searching for your website a long time till i found it. It looks just great, really. I'm looking for a lot of pictures, i hope in the future will be. In East Germany, where I lived in my childhood, i got the know the first fighter jet - the F-14 Tomcat of Grumman through the exiting movie Top Gun, and "fell in love" with it. I saw the movie in the US-Embassy in East Berlin in 1987, while it was still some kind of "bad deed" to enter the American Embassy. But I didn't care.

I must say I love airplanes since my childhood and even today i give this love of airplanes along to my kids. I will visit this site frequently, to see it growing better and better.

All the best and keep up the good work.!!!

God bless you all.

I have been a design and development engineer at Grumman for over 30 years - and am still going at Northrop Grumman. I plan to pass the word about this homepage around. Great job on the web-site! Why is the U.S. Navy replacing the F-14 with the F/A-18E? Yes, I know the Hornet is cheaper, smaller and maybe even a bit more efficient, but I'm sure that with a few avionics upgrades, developments on strike capabilities, and maybe a better engine would make the Hornet more than capable to surpass the Hornet by a long shot. Can anybody tell me if is there any current or planned further development on the Super Tomcat 21 or Attack Super Tomcat 21? It is sad to see a legendary air superiority fighter go out of service like this.

Sincerely, Pedro P. F-14 maniac

Currently employed at Clarksburg WV site, I have a generic Rolling Meadows badge number now. Your site and the Park bring back memories of when I was badge number 118725, the pride I felt in being a prototype mechanic at the "Ironworks", and a time when conversations at work might include how our Tomcat would stack up against the F-15, instead of wondering if we were going to get through the latest in an endless series of division changes Thanks, it is a moral booster (I can't describe how badly I felt when they took my Grumman badge number away)

This is a great and worthwhile endeavor that is being performed. I doubt if any company these days can instill the pride and comraderly that the employees of Grumman have. I am putting my money where my mouth is, the check is in the mail. My father was a 36 year Grummanite and I have his papers and pictures he gathered over the years. I just pulled out an old Grumman Plane News from May 13, 1960. There are names in there that even I recognize. Hi, Loved the site. Grumman paid for my associates degree, my bachelor's degree, and my master's. After I left in 1994, Grumman's contributions to my 401k also provided the down payment on my house. I learned of your web site via the ISA Integrator newsletter, published at the JSTARS site, in Melbourne, Florida. My family has been part of the "Grumman Family" for over 45 years now with my father, Eugene Burgess, who worked for the company for 35 years before retiring in 1990. My dad worked for the Quality Operations department on various programs while residing in Plants 2, 3, 5, and 10 in Bethpage. My godfather, Ken Becker, worked for the Calverton Operations for numerous years and retired in the 1990's as well. My two brothers, Mike, Darryl and myself, began our Grumman careers on Long Island as summer students and, unfortunately, had to leave the island to other Grumman facilities. Darryl now resides at the Milledgeville plant and Mike and I are located in Melbourne, Florida. I want to thank you for taking the time in letting me reminisce about the "old Grumman" and helping me rekindle the flame that has since left me when the Grumman Family was bought out by Northrop. Grumman instilled many values to my family, mainly that hard work and dedication, a company coming together as a family, serve far beyond the almighty dollar of today's corporations. I often wonder what the great founder of our beloved company, Leroy Grumman, would have thought of today's new Northrop Grumman Corporation. His vision of yesteryear was remarkable but the values he gave to his employees, passed down through the years, are values in which no of us can have stolen, bought, or taken away from us. Thank you again for bringing a smile to this tired face.

I was born and raised in Calverton, worked at Grumman for about 20 years (74-94). My husband worked there for 31 years (63-94). I have to admit, my first reaction to the park was not very positive. I worked on most of Grumman's aircraft, but the F-14 was my favorite, cause it could do just about anything. When this came along, I saw it as an "F-14 on a stick", but if it causes the "old Grumman family" to get together, then I'm for it-I miss everyone and welcome e-mail.

This is truly a terrific idea. I went to Grumman in July 1985 working for the first 15 months in Bethpage Plant 2. I knew I wanted to go to Calverton...so in Nov. 1986, ... Larry Francino took this 23 year old kid on board the Calverton Engineering staff. To my delight I was assigned to Barry Bopp's F-14 Structural group where I spent the next (and unfortunately last) 7.5 years of F-14 production. I felt it was truly an honor to have been there at the end. My tenure spanned the end of F-14A production, Block 60/65 upgrades, F-14D development (even moving it from plant 6 to the new 81), KB retrofits, D(R) retrofits and, of course, F-14D Production. I recall many good times and intense situations...who remembers working 24/7 on fixing those D(R) "MaeWest" fittings? I also have very fond memories of those we've lost, Bob Zebrowski, John Kotary, John Caldwell and especially to Hobie's children I send my deepest regrets...he was the glue that held the CTO Engineering staff together. In 1994 my last Grumman task was (ironically) to move the F-14 work to St. Augustine Fla. with the help of Al Russo and the many talented people of Calverton supporting the unhappy effort. But that was a past life...I'm an attorney now and if I can help this project let me know-Regards MJI

Hi to all my fellow Grummanites. It was a great working for a company that truly cared about the individual. I was involved in the business aspects of every aircraft program over the last 35 years of the company and especially enjoyed the trust and camaraderie that we all had for each other throughout all sites of Grumman - from Calverton to Bethpage to St. Augustine to Pt. Mugu to the even the carriers. I personally lead the fight to stop the F-14 from being killed by first Pres. Carter and then Secretary Cheney on 2 additional occasions. It now seems that the last vestige of the old Grumman is down here at Melbourne, FL.

Do you have the 10 acres on the former Grumman Calverton property to construct the park? There has been a lot of publicity about various developers bidding for all or part of the property, and I was curious if the site for the park is definite.

June,

Yes it is definite, the Town board recently passed a resolution granting our group a one acre site for the monument and memorial expandable to 10 for the future aviation museum. We have already been granted eligibility as a museum group by the US Navy and are proceeding with the town to identify the exact layout of the 10 acre expansion now. The answer to your question rests on the side of the rd on Rt 25 in Calverton, it's a sign that says future home of Grumman Memorial Park and Aerospace Museum. It's definite so rest assured this will happen, we are submitting site plan and preparing to break ground as soon as all the paper work is completed re: building permits etc.. It's time to put the shovel to the ground. Thanks for the concern.

I spent most of my Grumman years, since I started at Grumman in 1974, working on the F-14. I worked in plant 1 Dept 028 for many years and have a lot of good memories. Like most of us I got around, Plt 2, 3, Plt 6 in Calverton, Stuart Florida and now currently in Lake Charles Louisiana. Although its not the ole Grumman down here in Louisiana, its a good living and another learning experience. There is still a pretty good hold out of Grumbags in Florida where I guess it is the last major stand for the old Grumman. I think it is great to have this web site to keep the memory alive and a place where people can get in touch. I will be visiting Long Island in July and will certainly stop out at Calverton for a look see. I hope to get some E-mail someday from anyone who remembers me and let me know what's happening these days. Hope all Grummbags are doing well where ever they are.

My father, William E. Bassett, was the chief test pilot, and deputy plant manager for plant 6 in Calverton. He was there from 1965 to around 1980. I also was a grummanite for a short time in plant 6 as an assembly riveter on the A6A-E Mod. Also, my sister, Angela worked in the plans room in plant 6! I doubt if anyone will remember me (unless Bill Morebach is still alive, That #$@&**), but I would appreciate contact from anyone who knows Carl Rappold, plant 6 from 1970's and 80's. Carl was my partner while I was there and we made a great team! I lost track of him over the years and I would like to get back in touch with him if possible!

Such great pilots deserve a mention, for they're the ones who gave the Tomcat its fame and eternal glory. To Cdr. Henry M. "Hank" Kleeman, his rio, Lt. David venlet, to Lt. Larry Musczynski, and his rio Lt. Jim Anderson (VF-41, Nimitz, downing of 2 SU-22's, off the coast of Lybia on August 19, 1981) To Lt. Herman C. Cook and his rio Cdr. Steven P. Collins, to Cdr. Joseph B. Connelly and his rio Cdr. Leo F. Enright (VF-32, USS John F Kennedy, downing of 2 Mig-23's on January 4, 1989 off the coast of Lybia as well) To Lt. Stuart Broce and his rio Cdr. Ron McElraft (VF-1, USS Ranger, achieved F-14's only kill in the Gulf war, downing a MI-8 on February 6. 1991) To these and all the Tomcat pilots ever to sit in its cockpit, I would like to leave my utter respects for you, especially to Captain Henry "Hank" Kleeman, US Navy, first man to take the Tomcat into aerial combat, and first F-14 pilot to down a Mig, and I also leave my admiration for the Tomcat, the most lethal fighter in the world ever to roll off the Navy's carriers, "F-14 Tomcat, anywhere, anytime baby!!!!"

Congratulations on a Great Web site and for your efforts in establishing a fitting tribute to one of the finest companies there ever was. I wish you every success in your endeavors.

As a 45 year Grummanite, now retired and living off Long Island, this Web site provides an excellent opportunity to keep up with the park's progress.

I grew up in East Farmingdale where I first became familiar with Grumman when they shared the airfield there with Seversky. (Later to become Republic.) As kids we use to hang around the field and watch the F3F's takeoff and land. One of my biggest thrills was to get the autographs of test pilots, Jimmy Collins and Lee Gelback. Many years later, when I was interviewing people for Flight Test Instrumentation, I had the opportunity to interview Gelback who had come to Grumman to inquire about employment.

I probably never would have thought of that again if your Web site didn't get me started reminiscing.

I enjoy your website & I have contributed to the Grumman Memorial Park. I am proud to have worked for Grumman at plant 12 weld shop for 18 years. I have had many challenging jobs all over the country and on several aircraft carriers. I am looking forward to the park's completion so that I can take my family to visit it with me. I admire all of the work so many Grumman retirees have done to make this park possible. It is a part of Long Island's heritage and should not be forgotten.

As an Air frame mechanic working in both 1059 and 1060 I spent a lot of time in, on, and under the F 14. It was a pleasure to work with all the people who also worked in these departments especially Ralph Cirone and John Impagliazzo. I'm very pleased to know that this Memorial will be a fine reminder of what once was at Calverton. Thanks for a job well done by all who are involved in this great undertaking. My hat is off to you. I have never worked for Grumman, but my first association with the name came in the 40's when a comic book had as heroes "The Blackhawks" and they flew F5F,s (Skyrocket-I believe). Yes, I know that the plane never went into production. The first Grumman aircraft I worked on, as a Navy AO (Aviation Ordnanceman), was an F6F followed by TBF, F7F,S2F, F9F and the last was an A6. These aircraft seemed designed for relative ease of maintenance and the publications were easy to understand. Naval Aviation without a Grumman A/C in its inventory wouldn't be the same. You have a great site and I'm looking forward to future visits

A Memorial Park! What a great idea! I have many fond recollections of my work experience at Grumman - I worked there from 8/63 to 4/84 - from the LEM program to E2C. It was an exciting 20 years. When they open I'll go there. I've heard it's very big and nice and I heard they are going to have a IMAX Theatre there and other kind's of sites there too. I've heard on the airfield is that they are going to build a racetrack, hotel, movie studio and sports and entertainment complex there too. Well I'm looking forward in the future to see this.

GREAT IDEA and a good web pages! My dad, Walter Langdon, was a Grummanite for 37 1/2 yrs. He wanted to retire early in the 70's,, but Grumman talked him into waiting for the first layoff--they gave him 57 weeks severance and full pension! Dad passed away three years ago. He started on the F-6-F program and worked on the F-14 prototypes. I've got nothing but great memories of Grumman (and its slow pitch softball teams which dad managed for years :-). As soon as I dig up his start and retire dates I'm going to buy a brick in his honor at the park. After all these years,, I still consider myself the "son of a Grummanite" and damned proud of it!! keep the memories and spirit of the Ironworks alive up there!!

I have read all the comments from 1998 to present (Aug 1999)and I have only seen 2 people that I know. I spent 25 years in all, to the present date in Grumman and have worked with a lot of people. I hope to see more old Grumman folk visit the site and hope to hear from a few. I visit the site periodically and will continue to visit as long as it is available. I really enjoy the trip down memory lane. Even though it is not the same anymore, things change and life continues and new memories are made. Its just that when you spend so much of your life working for one company the memories are burnt in. I talk to many people in the aerospace industry who haven't been so lucky to be able to acquire so many years with one company. I feel lucky it lasted as long as it did. I'm talking like it is over, when I am still working on a Grumman program (J-STARS). But in a sense it is over cause it will never be the same. Funny how in retrospect it was good. But while your living it, you just didn't realize how good. I expect to feel the same about the times I'm living now and so on. If your reading this and remember me E-mail me I would like to hear about any of the ole Grumman guys and gals.

The A-10 is included because Grumman acquired the upgrade contract for it after Republic closed down.

We are always looking for more photos to post. The current ones are those from the Grumman History Center plus a few others from my own personal stock that I acquired when I was at Grumman. I haven't contacted the Navy to try and get squadron photos, but that sounds like a good idea. I plan to provide links to squadron sites also.

What a great site. Having spent time in Calverton, Bethpage, Isfahan ,Madrid ,Point Magu, and on ship with the F14 I have many great memories of those days. They were the happiest, wackiest of times. Hi to all my friends and co-workers.

What a great find on the net. It's been 20 years since I left Grumman; this site brings back many memories of working at Calverton. Worked in flight avionics dept plant 6 and plant 8. Anybody around from plt 8? I see Jim Carney listed message. We are presently working together for the same company here in northern Virginia. Swapping stories of times at Calverton. For the guys at plant 8 hello.

Help Please!!!

I have a photo taken in 1944 of a relative sitting in the cockpit of a Navy F4F Wildcat or F6F Hellcat. All you can see in the photo is the outside of the open cockpit, the windshield and a small amount of area behind the cockpit. If anyone can help me determine whether it's a Wildcat (F4F) or Hellcat (F6F) please e-mail me and I will e-mail you the photo.

Thanks

Subject: Father's dying wish - fly in an Avenger again
E-mail: tom.wales@berlitz.com

My father has just been informed that he has terminal cancer. The one thing he would like to do before his death, is to fly in an Avenger again. He was a radioman/gunner on one in WWII.

I am trying to make his wish come true, but am unsure where to turn to make it happen. Any help from anyone would be GREATLY appreciated. My father lives in NY, on Long Island. I would like to make this happen as soon as possible, while he is still feeling well enough to enjoy it.

Thank you very much...

Working 11 years with Tom (t-bone) Block in the flight equipment world, I had the opportunity to work with the finest test pilots in the world. Names like Gwynne, Cavanaugh, Leslie, Monroe, Ryan, Holton just to name a few. Watching these guys fly our Grumman aircraft is something one will never forget. Started in Bethpage then to Calverton, ended a 15 year career in St. Augustine. Northrop Grumman and Florida never quite grew on me, so my wife and I are heading back to Long Island, where we belong...just like the F-14.

This is a great site. I also work in the aerospace and defense industry as Leroy did. What a great name. I am looking for connections with the Grumman Family.  My cousin and I are trying to search our family. I am in the Connecticut area where Leroy's family grew up.  I know there is a connection. Just have to try to connect it.

A great web sight collection of Grumman aircraft. Now if we can just slip in a picture of a Gulfstream 1 or 2 to add the the frosting on the Grumman cake.

Webdesigner's Note:  We are trying to have pictures of all products posted on this site.  I'll see if we can get some Gulfstream photos in the next batch.

Just saw the ground-breaking news story on News 12 tonight and was thrilled to see this legendary company finally being recognized for what it was. The memories, both good and bad, came flooding back. As a former Grummanite, I anxiously await being able to walk the grounds out at Calverton again, to possibly hear the roar of engines; the hum of an E-2C wouldn't be bad either. I'd love to be able to bring my kids to see what it was all about. Miss the big blue ball and all that it stood for. Thank goodness someone has been able to resurrect it. I LOVED seeing the roof emblem in the mock-up building that said only GRUMMAN.

It's great to have a place so full of memories for me. After 35 years at Grumman, it was hard to leave, but now I have a place to come back to. Remember the good and bad times, but most of all still feel so proud of what we as Grummanites accomplished, in the air, on the seas, in space and on the ground.

I worked for Grumman in Calverton for almost 20 yrs. My Mom and Dad both worked for Grumman - they met at Grumman during World War II. Both he and she were laid off after the war. My Dad went back to work for Grumman and retired in 1977 from Calverton. My question is - can I purchase a brick for each one of my parents?

WE ALL SHOULD REMEMBER - THE F-14 WAS A '"GRUMMAN" PLANE -GOD BLESS GRUMMAN AND THE PEOPLE WHO BUILT A STERLING PRODUCT.

Webdesigner Note:  Yes, you can buy as many bricks as you wish for other people, as well as yourself.

I am a retired civilian pilot whose has flown, among many other aircraft, the Grumman Goose. It is a very fine aircraft and a pleasure to fly. If memory serves me right the registration number was (Canadian) CF-RQI and was based at Port Hardy, Vancouver island, B.C. Canada. You have a great web site, keep up the good work. Cheers, Bruce.

I have been a Grummanite since 1963. I'm fortunate that I continue to be a part of the organization. The web-site is a great idea, in fact in the OLD DAYS, a "Project Sterling Award" would have been in order.

Keep up the good work and look forward to viewing updates.

Steve -

During my six years in Naval aviation, my most memorable flights occurred in the A-6E Intruder. Between 1990 and 1994, I was a B/N with Attack Squadron EIGHTY-FIVE (VA-85). The Intruder was, without a doubt, the most reliable and forgiving aircraft I have ever flown. Bravo Zulu, Grumman Corporation!

Lucky enough to have worked for the Aero Test Group's Low-Speed Wind Tunnel in Bethpage back in 1984-85 along with a good group of Polytechnic Institute Aerospace Engineering Students. EA-6B and E-2C mods were the big test projects back then -- both are still flying high! The two X-29s were in Plant 5 -- a great time to be at Grumman. Hope to see future comments from some of the folks associated with Bill McAllister's facility, Fritz and Cappy's aero-test group, and the aerodynamics folks. Have the Long Island AIAA Section and the Cradle of Aviation museum been asked to help out with the F-14 Project?
